South African Barbecue: the Braai

Few countries like South Africa are so crazy about barbecue. But it’s strictly forbidden to call it like this, it’s a Braai, otherwise nobody will understand you

This is the barbecue of the Afrikaners. The word Braai vleis means ‘grilled meat’ in Afrikaans. Piece of meat, beef, pork or kudu sausage, corn, vegetables, bread and even sandwiches… everything is cooked over the flame.
I have been told that the word Braai is also used to say “to cook”.

Braaï is a social custom above all!

It is almost impossible to run out of wood, it is sold everywhere and at all hours. Near petrol stations, in grocery shops, supermarkets, for every good South African, one must be able to make a fire for the grill at any time.
By the same token, it is almost immoral and even scandalous to find oneself somewhere without a barbecue around to grill one’s little meal: campsite, restaurant, youth hostel?

I was fined for trying to fry my sausages in the pan: “You’re in South Africa, that’s unacceptable! “And they lit the barbecue… sorry Braai for me and me alone.
Music, beer and wine are always on the menu, without maners … or dessert!
