Grasshoppers for lunch!

Asia enchants us with its exotic and unexpected flavours! You have read correctly, it is grasshoppers, crispy and cleverly spiced up with subtle spices in your plate!

From Beijing to Saigon, it is possible to find grasshoppers in the food section and not always at the best price. Cockroaches, silkworms, ants or spiders, insects and arthropods are not all easy to catch and some even act as caviar! Eating insect has a very scientific name: entomophagy.

After the Yuck! and the horrified look always comes the question: and… is it good?

Well yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s even very good for the taste and for your health! Insects have undeniable gustatory qualities and are also very nourishing and rich in fibre. Rich in nutriments, the grasshopper is even the insect with the highest level of protein. Is that why it jumps so high and so far, hard to say but I can’t deny it, the roasted grasshopper tastes great! So there’s nothing to be proud of for having tested this Asian delicacy, it is both crunchy and melting with a little nutty taste, nothing disgusting, on the contrary.

On the market stalls you can find just about anything: caterpillars, worms, fried scorpions and spiders, beetles that are more resistant under the tooth, as well as ants and termites

And these little beasts are rather expensive to buy. In China, they are dried ants that you sprinkle on your dish, in Cambodia, fried tarantulas are sold at a high price and Bangkok scorpions on skewers are more popular than patai. Apart from the exotic gastronomic adventure and the souvenir photo, the success of chewable insects is very serious. Nutritionists and shopkeepers see them as the solution to combat world hunger. All that remains is to convince the public to overcome their aversion to insects and their good taste!

If you manage to overcome your dislike for small animals, you will certainly be surprised by this tasty culinary experience. As for me, I am already converted and ready when we find some in our European supermarkets.

Food when traveling is adventure!
