Ometepe is Nicaragua at its best!
I’ve already said it about other adventures: sometimes everything goes perfectly. The weather is radiant, the island is full of surprises, the hostel is nice and cheap, the atmosphere is thunderous, monkeys in the trees, warm islanders and a bunch of fellow travellers.
All you need now is the address: Ometepe, Nicaragua
Ometepe is very small, it really consists of two islands holding hands, each one has its own volcano, so no one is jealous.
Our small team consists of an Italian trapeze artist, two German psychology students, a very handsome English giant with a devastating sense of humour and a Dutch nurse.
In Ometepe there are plenty of things to do: sea kayaking, a waterfall to visit, two volcanoes to climb, jungle trekking, bike rides, natural swimming pools to relax in, barbecues, fiestas, the beach, villages…
Ometepe offers very beautiful moments, funny, strong, intense
I hope it hasn’t changed. Our hostel was a family run, quiet, by the water. The activities weren’t expensive and even though the bikes were really tired (Eva lost her handlebars on the way), we had more laughs than annoyances.
We crossed the jungle to reach a waterfall as powerful as a shower, chased the monkeys that were throwing green mangoes at us, paddled against the current that was taking us to the forbidden island, invaded by aggressive monkeys. But above all, we admired, sitting on the pontoon, a glass in hand, silent, one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen.
The island is full of birds, parrots, monkeys, horses, crabs, frogs and lizards. The jungle is whispering, the sea is strong
People were kind to us, curious, disinterested. We could spend time watching the volcano take off and put on its cloud cap, the sky and its light again and again.
If you don’t find yourself in Ometepe with the best companions in the world, it might be a little less good but you won’t be bored for a second.
